Radar to radar interference mitigation

Automotive radar is a key element of future autonomous vehicles therefore these systems will become more and more prevalent leading to situations in which multiple radar systems operate in close proximity. The chance of suffering from interfering radars will increase leading to reduced performance. Several countermeasures are known from literature. In this assignment the interference will be measured using a new automotive radar front-end. Several mitigation techniques will be implemented in Matlab to investigate their effectiveness. Furthermore the complexity and system requirements for ASIC or DSP implementation will be investigated.

Current interference mitigation techniques use randomization, detect and remove bad samples or detect and move to another spectral band. More advanced techniques are known from non-automotive domains. These techniques make use of Space Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) which is too complex for automotive signal processors. Nevertheless, a simplified version could be used to place spectral nulls at the position of interferers at the beginning of the processing chain in order to suppress the interferer.

Special care has to be taken in order not to suppress any reflecting object in the same direction as the interferer.
