ET4173 Introduction to UWB technology

Topics: Ultra-wideband technology as used in future communications, radar and navigation systems

Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology is becoming of greater importance as the pressure for signal bandwidth increases. This course introduces students to UWB technology as it will be used in future communications, radar, and navigation systems, and gives detailed attention to both UWB wireless systems and applications in the frequency (FD) and time (TD) domains. The course consists of three major parts.

In Part 1 the fundamentals of UWB technology such as waveforms and spectra of short pulses, basic UWB signal processing, radiation, and propagation of short electromagnetic pulses is discussed.

Part 2 of the course is dedicated to realizations of UWB technology and systems. In particular, some basic designs of short-pulse generators, UWB amplifiers, and sampling receivers are analyzed. A general approach to UWB wireless system design is introduced. UWB system design implementation of the key facets of modern UWB systems in both the frequency (FD) and time (TD) domains is discussed.

In part 3 applications of UWB technology in telecommunications, radar and positioning are discussed. General discussion of the system-level trade-offs of such UWB systems is complemented by a detailed analysis of practical systems designed and implemented at TU Delft.

This course get students a basic understanding of UWB signal properties, UWB technology, and UWB wireless system design as well as an understanding of the advantages and limitations of UWB technology for different applications. It also gets hand-on experience with UWB signals and systems.
